The following is a list of 10 tools every new Radio UserLand user should install. These tools should help new Radio users get off the ground and running with Radio UserLand. I tried my best to narrow the list down to the most essential tools. Of course, this list doesn't include all the great tools available, but then it wouldn't be a top ten if I included any more, now would it?

activeRenderer

activeRenderer is an outline publishing tool for Radio UserLand. It brings the power of outlining to your blogging and web publishing experience. With activeRenderer, you can
publish outlines on your public web site. Style your weblog as an outline. Add active blogrolls to your site's pages. Publish your browser bookmarks as an active blogroll.
Enhance your pages with news feed boxes. Browse outlines, RSS news feeds, and the content of Radio's aggregator from activeRenderer's outline browser.

backLogAllRSS

The backLogAllRSS tool generates a backlog RSS file of your entire weblog by pressing one button. One reason for doing this is to upload the entire history of your weblog to a service such as Feedster so that it knows about all of your weblog posts, not just the ones since you added your weblog to their service.

dataFileCleaner

The dataFileCleaner tool will remove certain errant entries from your Data Files that cause problems.

editThisRadioPage

editThisRadioPage adds an Edit this Page link to your live site for easy editing of your weblog posts.

DirectoryTool

Kit

Kit is a suite of "page tools" for Radio UserLand 8, including Weblog search, an improved News Aggregator page, a web Quick Script, "Radio to the Past" for changing weblog items' dates, a web outline editor, a per-category weblog index, a subscribed feeds lister, file uploader, and the Kit dashboard.

MailEdit

The MailEdit tool works like the Mail-To-Weblog functionality built into Radio. If you send a message with the correct subject to the email address that Radio is set up to monitor, it will be posted to your weblog. In addition, MailEdit will return an email confirmation of the posting, along with a copy of the post suitable for editing.

Markdown

Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers. Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML). In other words, it makes HTML editing easy! Andy Fragen created a tool for Radio UserLand that allows you to use Markdown on your Radio posts. His tool is in beta and you need to email him for the tool.

Master Ping

The Master Ping tool comes with blo.gs, blo.gs extended, Syndic8, Syndic8 extended, Yahoo and Technocrati.

RadioAtomBridge

The RadioAtomBridge tool is a way to mirror blog posts from Radio Userland to blogs that are hosted at Blogger.com.

Workbench

A set of easy-to-use scripts by Rogers Cadenhead, author of Radio UserLand Kick Start, that enhance the functionality of a Radio UserLand weblog. Workbench.viewCategories is a script to display category links on your home page template and other pages. Workbench.viewPostIndex is a script to display links to your posts in reverse chronological order.

Now there's yet another way Radio publishers can use Radio UserLand to post entries to an alternate weblogging system. In this case, you can use Radio to post to your wordpress.com weblog.

This is pretty cool. Grab the tool here and drop it in your Radio UserLand tools folder. I was using the OPML Editor to post to my wordpress weblog using this tool but now that I know I can do the same thing within Radio, I'm going to give it a go.

Writing Ruby code in Radio UserLand

"I'm spending some time today hand-compling a version of Ruby on my iBook using the excellent instructions found on the HiveLogic site by Dan Benjamin. So far, so good. I have been running Locomotive, a great app written to aggregate a Ruby, RubyGems and Rails installation to make it easier for developers to write apps. In the interest of reducing some clutter, I'm going to get my local environment set correctly. I have a secondary reason: writing Ruby code in Radio's outliner."

Yes! Now I can talk about it. I've been on the MarsEdit beta test team from day one, making sure to get in those Radio UserLand requests for my favorite weblog editor. Guess what Radio users? Now you can add enclosures, such as podcasts, to your posts. I use MarsEdit to post to three of my blogs on a near daily basis. It's cool and I think you should try it out, especially now that development is moving forward on this essential app.

Do you recall my irritating Radio UserLand issue about an error window that would appear every time I started Radio? Well, for the first time in many moons, I just started Radio and did not get the error window.

Why not? Well, I can only say that I've been fiddling around with my two copies of Radio UserLand, deleting old categories, cleaning things up, etc. Something I did must have cleared up the issue. I have no idea what at this point.

Long standing calendar bug squashed

The 'draw calendar' script in Radio appears to have a bug and apparently, many have been affected. The issue stems from posting anything on categories and *not* on the home page in the last day of a month. Then, next month radio would stick with the older dates and not the updated calendar.

Steve Kirks of UserLand has been digging around and discovered the problem.

I found the bug, a frightfully simple one to fix. The script was only checking the day number to determine what items went on a day. The change is simple: check the whole date! I sent the fix to Lawrence this morning and we'll release it ASAP.

Shared outlines, finally

Paolo is going to resurrect the Shared Outline Tool for Radio UserLand. I always liked the promise of this particular tool but it never left the beta stage. I figured it was never to see the light of day. Until now. Paolo says..

We started developing a tool, it kinda worked but after a while we dropped the project to focus on other issues.

Radio to detect when application folder has been moved or renamed

This is something that has plagued Radio users for years. If you move Radio to a different folder or rename the folder Radio resides in, all hell breaks loose. Andy Fragen wrote a script called myFixFilePathsAndAddresses to handle this situation but now UserLand is going to be finishing a set of special startup-code for Radio, which will detect when the application folder has been moved or renamed.

Yes, I agree. Hosted services are great for some things but having Radio on your desktop is like having your own car instead of borrowing your parent's vehicle. You can do whatever you want to your site.

Browse with Flock and post to Radio with built in weblog editor!

Flock is a neat new browser. It has some nice features like integrated support for del.icio.us and flickr. It also has a built-in weblog editor that supports the Metaweblog API, which means that you can use it to post to your Radio weblog.

Need to figure out what your username and password is? Visit this Prefs page while Radio is running on your computer.

PS - Flock is in alpha or beta mode. There is a lot to be done. You cannot currently change the name of your weblog (at least I can't). Also, you can't set the category. Not a big deal since you can always visit the Radio home page and set a category from there.

Maybe our theory about putting the content management on the workstation wasn't so bad after all. That's the approach Radio took in 2002. After a while it became clear people preferred to have someone else manage the content management for them."

That's why I moved away from Manila and switched to Radio UserLand when it first came out. I was tired of paying hosting fees and I wanted to keep my files on my computer. Putting a server on my computer and having it upload rendered files to my ftp server was revolutionary. I no longer needed to be connected to the net to create weblog posts. Imagine that. I just find it hard to believe that this model still isn't very popular. I'll bet it gets more popular as the years tick by though.

Steve said, "go into user.radio.settings.files and see if there's an entry in that table for that ".Trashes" file" and Andy said, "Following on Steve's comment you can use the findString script in workspace.userLand to search on ".Trashes"

Posts have been slow on this site. About six months ago my life took a drastic, unexpected turn and my attention towards Radio UserLand: The Missing Manual became a casualty. I feel sad about this but I am also proud of what I created here and the attention it received from so many wonderful Radio users.

I will keep this site alive. The posts will continue to trickle in at a slow pace with a Radio tip being delivered only occasionally. Perhaps I'll pick up the pace again in the future but for now I wanted you to know what to expect should you decide to unsubscribe from this feed.

I want to start off this post with a question. What do you want with regard to the documentation for Radio UserLand? What is wrong with it? What is right with it? How can it be better?

Thank you Steve and Lawrence and all at UserLand for setting me up with a Manila site so I can start discussions like the one above! I've decided to call my new Manila site We Become the Media. My initial use of this site will be to create a forum for discussion amongst readers of my various blogs, including [Radio UserLand: The Missing Manual](http://www.becomethemedia.org/radio/ "Radio UserLand tips and tricks. Geared towards the newbie). That's a perfect reason to add Manila to my mainly Radio based configuration. And it just might inspire me to write some Tips for using Radio and Manila together. There are already some good tips out there too so google around.

I absolutely love working with Manila, did I mention? I've been using Frontier almost daily since 1997 and was even a Manila site host for a few years back then under my business Web Surf Hawaii. Once I got out of hosting and could no longer afford a Manila license, I made the switch to Radio UserLand for all my personal sites and a even a few clients sites (I LOVE categories in Radio).

Though Radio UserLand is an amazing application, when you need to add a forum to the mix you've got to look to Manila. Now that I've got the [new site](http://we.becomethemedia.org/) up and running, I want to make it flow with what I'm trying to accomplish on this site yet remain independent enough to provide a forum for people interested in more than just Radio UserLand. People who are interested in becoming the media to be more specific. When people come to me and ask for my help in getting heard on the net, I usually implement or suggest Radio UserLand since it can accomplish so much of what is needed from today's weblogger/podcaster/newsHound/ for such a good price. Though there is decent documentation, there is still a need for more and better ways of explaining how to get the most out of Radio. That's my goal. You can help by joining the discussion.

I'm back from Mexico. What an amazing time I had in the Yucatan! Look for a post, complete with pictures, on my personal weblog, iceplant radio, soon.

Regarding Radio, it's time to get back into the swing of things and get this site going once again. Thanks for your patience. I'll be posting here again about the wonderful world of Radio UserLand right away. I hope to release a new Weekly Tip by Sunday and I'm pondering taking more of a role in the UserLand Radio Discussion Forum if I can work out the logistics. More on that later... For now, let me start posting some juicy tidbits that have arrived in my news aggregator like the one where Rogers Cadenhead is giving away his well written book on Radio UserLand! I've got this book and I highly recommend it to any Radio user. Oh, and there is a beta going on right now for those brave souls who care to test out an upstreaming performance improvement from UserLand.

No posts till May. Going on vacation.

Survey: Should UserLand offer a web-based version of Radio?

Take the UserLand survey. I just did. Personally, I have Radio on my main machine. I also have Radio installed on my house server, an Apple Cube. I wouldn't use a UserLand hosted Radio service. I would use a UserLand hosted Manila service if it were cheaper than it currently is, however.

Excellent news this morning from UserLand for Podcasters. Why is this important? Because many people use Radio for podcasting but UserLand only allows files up to 1MB to be uploaded to their server. Hardly enough for podcasting.

We've located the core of the problem, a UserTalk verb with code in the kernel called 'file.modified' that is stealing a big chunk of processor time. Either leave a comment to this post or send me an email directly. No guarantee that I'll know the answer but I'll try my best.

Also, how am I doing? Are the tips I've covered useful? I know some people have benefitted from them. How's the format? Shall I include more pictures? How about movies? I've got the ability to record .mov files with my software, Screen Snapz Pro. I've even thought about podcasting some tips but most tips probably wouldn't make much sense in an audible format.

Tangelo takes the Radio approach to weblogging

The main reason I like Radio is that it lives on my own computer. There's a weblogging application for Mac OS X and Windows called [Tangelo](http://bradrhine.com/tangelo) that takes the same approach...

'Radio' users have nothing to do here. The comments are hosted by Manila servers as discussion group messages and the comment pop up window is also created by 'Manila' servers.

There's a new service in town. It's called [Ta-da](http://www.tadalist.com/) and it's a free online to-do list maker by the gurus at [37Signals](http://www.37signals.com). They make Basecamp, the incredibly useful web-based project management system I use with most of my clients.

I created a list called [Radio UserLand Tools That Rock](http://donovanwatts.tadalist.com/lists/public/2544) and made it viewable to the public.
